Achilles tendonitis is inflammation of the Achilles tendon. This is an acute condition usually caused by increased activity that aggravates and inflames the Achilles tendon, with or without actual injury. Left untreated, the condition can progress to the more chronic Achilles tendonosis.
Both Achilles tendonitis and Achilles tendonosis can initially be treated conservatively with NSAIDs, stretching, physical therapy, or immobilization. Only when conservative treatment fails does surgery, although rare, become necessary. A podiatrist can select the best treatment options or the appropriate surgical procedure when necessary.
