Charcot Foot

A form of neuroarthropathy, Charcot foot can occur in anyone who suffers from any form of neuropathy that renders the foot insensate. Because the patient cannot feel the bones weakening and breaking down, the foot can ultimately degenerate and collapse. The condition is more often seen in the diabetic patient who has peripheral neuropathy.

Charcot foot is an extremely serious deformity; without proper diagnosis and treatment, it can become a limb-threatening condition. Depending on how severe the condition becomes, surgery may be required to repair fractures and realign the foot. Your podiatrist will diagnose and discuss with you the treatment options to prevent this deformity from becoming a limb-threatening condition.
