One can sustain a frank fracture, or broken bone, of any of the bones in the foot when a more severe injury occurs.
Stress fractures occur from a less dramatic event. A simple fracture can be treated nonsurgically, but the more severe, displaced, or comminuted (splintered or fragmented) fracture may require surgery. The podiatrist will examine the foot, take
X-rays, and recommend the treatment best suited for the severity of the fracture.
