Ganglion Cyst

A ganglion cyst is a benign soft tissue mass that is filled with a jellylike material. The cause of these "lumps" is unknown, but trauma is suspected. Ganglion cysts can be painful or pain-free.

Oftentimes, aspirating the fluid out of the cyst and re-injecting cortisone into it and then wrapping the foot can decrease or eliminate the cyst. In other instances, surgical removal may be necessary or preferred.

Treatment depends on whether the cysts hurt or cause some other inconvenience. Podiatrists see this condition fairly frequently and can discuss various treatment options with you.
