Gout

Gout is caused by a buildup of sodium urate crystals in the joints or other soft tissues. The most common area affected is the big toe joint, but it can occur elsewhere on the body, such as the knee, hand, wrist, and elbow. The affected area becomes inflamed and painful. Gout is typically treated with oral medication.

If left untreated, repeated episodes of gout can lead to degenerative changes in the joint. Blood work may reveal elevated uric acid. Discuss your condition with a podiatrist to determine the diagnosis and receive the proper treatment.
