Hammertoe

Hammertoe is defined as the contracture of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toe, usually caused by a muscle and tendon imbalance. Usually flexible at first, hammertoes that are diagnosed early can be more easily remedied with nonsurgical means than those variations that have progressed to a more rigid condition, which may then require surgery.

A hammertoe is usually aggravated by shoes that press downward on the toe, which can cause corns to form from chronic shoe irritation. If left untreated, the condition can progress to ulceration. Your podiatrist will determine the appropriate treatment options depending on the severity of the deformity.
