Pain in the bottom of the heel has been referred to in the past as "heel spur syndrome," but this term is misleading. Seen in those with or without pain in the bottoms or backs of the heels, heel spurs are seldom the actual cause of the heel pain but can be an aggravating factor. The spur forms over a long period of time due to constant traction on the insertion of either the Achilles tendon (posterior heel spur) or the plantar fascia (plantar heel spur). X-rays reveal the spur.
Diagnosis and treatment is provided by the podiatrist, who can discuss various treatment options for this common disorder (also see plantar fasciitis). Surgery is seldom indicated and is usually reserved as a last resort.
