Tarsal tunnel syndrome is a compression of the posterior tibial nerve as it courses along the inside of the foot and ankle under the ankle bone, within the tarsal canal. This is the same condition seen in the wrist, where it is known as carpal tunnel syndrome. The compression of the nerve causes pain, tingling, or numbness that radiates along the course of the nerve on the inside of the foot and oftentimes into the heel and arch.
Tarsal tunnel syndrome has various causes; a podiatrist can determine the cause and then prescribe the best course of treatment. Conservative treatment is recommended initially, but the condition may require surgical intervention if necessary.
