More often than not, weak ankles are the result of repeated ankle sprains. In some cases, weak ankles are present at birth. Your podiatrist can examine the ankle, determine the stability of the ankle, and obtain imaging studies to determine the extent of damage to the ankle ligaments. Treatment options range from bracing the ankle to physical therapy or, for severely weak ankles, surgery.
